For most South African SMEs, that starts with a Google Business Profile.
Google Business Profile is free and lets eligible businesses control information displayed about them across Google Search and Maps.
Creating the profile is straightforward. Creating it correctly matters more.
Incorrect addresses, inappropriate categories, duplicate listings or information that does not accurately represent the business can create problems later, particularly when Google asks you to verify the business.
Here is the process we recommend for South African businesses.
Check whether your business is already on Google Maps
Do this before creating anything.
Search Google Maps for:
Business name + suburb or city
For example:
ABC Plumbing Bellville
Also search your address and telephone number.
If Google already has a listing for the business, claim that profile rather than immediately creating another one.
Creating another profile when one already exists can leave you dealing with duplicate listings rather than improving the listing you already have.
Create your Google Business Profile
Go to Google Business Profile and sign in using the Google account that should own the profile.
Use an account the business controls.
Avoid creating an important business asset under the personal Google account of an employee, agency or temporary contractor.
Google will then ask for information about the business.
This normally includes your:
- business name
- business category
- location or service area
- contact details
- website
The information should represent the business as it exists in the real world. Google’s official guidance also recommends one profile per business and accurate real-world information.
Use your real business name
Enter the name customers actually know you by.
Do not turn the business-name field into an SEO title.
If your company trades as:
Cape Plumbing Solutions
do not change the Google listing to:
Cape Plumbing Solutions | Plumber Cape Town | Geyser Repairs Cape Town
The objective is to establish a consistent business entity across your website, Google profile and other legitimate business listings.
That consistency also makes future profile management considerably easier.
Choose your primary business category carefully
This is one of the decisions worth researching before completing the profile.
Google states that categories help connect businesses with customers searching for their products or services and recommends selecting the specific category that best describes the business.
If you run a dental practice, for example, an appropriate specific dental category is normally preferable to selecting a broad category simply because it sounds related.
You can also add relevant additional categories where the business genuinely provides those services.
Do not add unrelated categories merely because you would like to appear for those searches.
If you are unsure which primary and additional categories to use, read our guide on how to choose the right Google Business Profile category before changing the profile.
There is another reason to treat category changes carefully.
Google may ask an established profile to verify again after material information changes. Category changes should therefore be deliberate rather than experimental.

Decide whether customers actually visit your address
This distinction matters.
A business with customer-facing premises and a business that travels to customers are not necessarily configured in the same way.
Examples of businesses customers might visit include:
- restaurants
- retail stores
- dental practices
- workshops
A plumber, mobile mechanic or cleaning company may instead operate as a service-area business.
Google’s verification system distinguishes between physical-location and service-area businesses. Its service-area guidance says businesses that do not serve customers at their address should remove that address from the public profile.
Do not display an address simply because you think having an address will help you rank.
Configure the profile according to how the business actually operates.
Complete the important business information
Once the basic profile exists, complete it properly.
Telephone number
Use a number customers can actually reach.
Website
Link to the official business website.
Opening hours
Keep these accurate, including changes to operating hours.
Services
Add the real services customers can purchase.
Business description
Explain what the business does, who it serves and where it operates without stuffing the description with repeated keywords.
Photos
Use genuine photographs of the business, premises, team, vehicles, products or completed work where appropriate.
The goal is a profile that accurately represents the business before you begin trying to optimise its visibility.
Complete Google’s verification process
Creating the profile does not mean Google will automatically give you full control over it.
Google determines which verification options are available for each location.
Verification methods can include:
- Phone
- SMS
- Video
- Postcard
- Other verification methods offered by Google
Not every method is available to every business.
Follow the verification method Google provides.
If Google requests evidence, make sure the business information you submit matches the information already associated with the company.
Do not attempt to circumvent verification.
The purpose of verification is to establish that the business exists and that you are authorised to manage its profile. Google’s add or claim guidance confirms that verification is required before controlling how business information appears.
Don’t stop once the business appears on Maps
Getting onto Google Maps and competing on Google Maps are separate jobs.
Once verified, review:
- primary and secondary categories
- services
- website relevance
- business information
- photos
- customer reviews
- directory consistency
- local landing pages
Your website should reinforce the same information.
Once the profile is active, use a consistent process to request genuine customer feedback. Our guide explains how to get more Google reviews without incentives or scripted wording.
If your profile says you are a plumber operating in Bellville but your website barely mentions plumbing services or the areas you serve, you are giving Google and potential customers less useful information than you could.
A South African example
Consider a plumbing company servicing Bellville, Durbanville and Brackenfell.
A weak setup might consist of:
Name: Cape Town Best Plumber Cheap Plumbing Services
Category: Contractor
Website: Generic homepage
Service area: Western Cape
A better setup would use the company’s genuine trading name, the most accurate available primary category, its actual service areas, complete plumbing services and a website containing useful pages explaining those services.
The second version describes a real business.
That is what your Google Business Profile should do before advanced local SEO work begins.

What should you do next?
If your business isn’t on Google Maps, start by checking whether a profile already exists.
If it doesn’t, create the profile carefully rather than rushing through the setup.
If your business already appears on Google Maps but isn’t generating enough visibility or enquiries, creating another listing isn’t the answer.
The next step is a proper Google Business Profile and local SEO audit.
